The Magical Island of Santorini

Mostly famous for its stunning sunsets, the beautiful island of Santorini does not disappoint! White washed walls, blue domes, and endless views as far as the eye can see! If you visit Greece, visit Santorini - do not miss this opportunity...

Santorini stands out as one of the most captivating islands in the Aegean Sea. Its unique landscape, shaped by volcanic activity, offers visitors a blend of stunning views, rich history, and vibrant culture. Whether you seek adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, Santorini has something to offer every traveller. This guide explores the best things to see and do on the island, helping you make the most out of your visit.
Oia
Oia is the postcard image of Santorini. Perched on the northern tip of the island, this village is famous for its whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and breathtaking sunsets. Strolling through Oia’s cobblestone streets, you will find charming shops, art galleries, and cosy cafes. The village’s elevated position offers panoramic views of the caldera and the deep blue sea. Make sure you visit all of the beautiful blue domes, as well as windmills and the castle of Oia.
And just below Oia lies Ammoudi Bay, a small fishing harbor known for its fresh seafood tavernas. After descending the steps from Oia, you can enjoy a meal by the water or take a refreshing swim in the clear waters. The bay is also a popular spot for cliff diving, attracting adventurous visitors. But what you really want to do is come down here and hop on a boat and sail around the island on a catamaran! Check out my next blog for a review!
Eat local seafood or hop on a catamaran cruise and enjoy the views of the harbour
Fira
Fira or Thira, is actually the island’s capital, not Oia. It offers a mix of shops, restaurants, and museums. The town sits on the edge of the caldera, providing spectacular views. From Fira, you can take the cable car down to the old port or hike along the caldera edge. A short walk from Fira leads to Skaros Rock, a large volcanic rock formation that once served as a fortress. It’s a great spot for photography and appreciating the island’s rugged beauty.

Santorini Wine Tasting
Santorini’s volcanic soil produces distinctive wines. The Koutsogiannopoulos Wine Museum offers an immersive experience where visitors can learn about the island’s winemaking history and techniques. The museum is housed in a series of underground caves, providing a cool and atmospheric setting. Tours include wine tastings paired with local delicacies, giving a full sensory experience. This visit is ideal for wine lovers and those interested in local culture.

Koutsogiannopoulos Wine Museum & Winery offers a unique experience combining the Museum Tour followed by the Wine Tasting. All the history of Santorinian wine making from 1660 to 1970 will be revealed in front of your eyes during your museum tour and you will have the opportunity to taste exceptional fresh and aged wines from our exclusive large section. You may choose between five different wine tasting packages offered and enjoy the experience in our specially designed air-conditioned areas. I paid €30 per person for the Bronze package (see above) which included 4 wines, 1 shot and snacks on the side.

Santorini Volcano & Hot Springs
Santorini’s volcanic origins are visible everywhere, but a visit to the volcano itself is a must. Boat tours depart from the old port in Fira to Nea Kameni, the active volcanic island in the centre of the caldera. You can hike to the crater’s edge and witness steam vents and sulphur deposits, as well as visitin the hot springs nearby, offering you a chance to relax in warm, mineral-rich waters. Make sure you check out my blog for the whole experience!
Beaches of Santorini
There's nothing better than a beach day. But unfortunately Santorini’s beaches are unlike typical sandy shores. The Red Beach, near Akrotiri, is famous for its striking red cliffs that contrast with the deep blue sea. The beach is small but dramatic, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The White Beach, accessible by boat from Red Beach or Akrotiri, features white pebbles and towering white cliffs. It is quieter and less crowded, ideal for those seeking a peaceful spot to relax. Other beaches with black sand include places like Caldera Beach, Paralia Perissa Beach and Kamari Beach...

Elsewhere on the island there are many other things to do including visiting the cute little town of Pyrgos nesttled on top of a hill, get yourself lost through the small streets and work your way up to the top of the hill to find the old Venetian castle ruins. Drive up the mountain and visit the Prophet Elias Monastery, located at the highest point of the island. I recommend visiting also the Atlantis Museum, it showcases all the history about the formation of the island and the theory behind why Santorini is one of the key locations of where the lost city of Atlantis is supposed to be hidden. Check out the museum's website for more information: Lost Atlantis Experience - Interactive Museum. Lastly at the southern tip of Santorini, the Akrotiri Lighthouse stands as a landmark overlooking the sea. The area around the lighthouse is less touristy and offers peaceful walking paths with views of the coastline...

Some popular dishes to try include fava (split pea puree), tomato keftedes (tomato fritters), and fresh grilled fish.
