This unique adventure combines natural history, stunning views, and a chance to swim in warm, mineral-rich waters. The Santorini Volcano and Hot Springs Boat Tour from SantoriniView provides an unforgettable experience visiting the active volcano, learning about its dramatic past, and relaxing in the nearby hot springs. This review covers what to expect on the tour, the highlights of the volcanic island, and practical tips to make the most of your visit.

Santorini’s volcanic origins are visible everywhere, but a visit to the volcano itself is a must. The boat tour departs daily from the old port of Fira, at 11:00 in the morning and at 14:30. After only 15mins by boat, you'll arrive at the volcano bay of Nea Kameni, where you'll dock for about 1hr 30mins, during which you can follow the path to the top, where the active craters are, to see steam vents and sulphur deposits. Next, on the island of Palia Kameni for the hot springs, the famous mud baths, which were formed as a result of a series of volcanic eruptions. The temperature of the water in the small bay of Agios Nikolaos changes with the months, but it tends to be warmer than the typical sea currents in the area. The boat will be staying there for about 30mins to allow you a chance to relax in warm, mineral-rich waters.

Departure:

The excursion starts from the picturesque Old Port of Santorini in Fira This port is only accessible by cable car, which is the most common way, as it takes only 3mins to go down, or you have to descend 587 steps on foot. You have to pay €10 more per way for the cable car ticket, and you will be surprised by the steep slopes of the Caldera. The tiny port will appear under these huge rocks and the cave houses that seem to dangle on the cliff. There, the guides of your excursion will be waiting for you, to give you all the important information you need...

Volcano:

The first destination of the trip will be the famous volcano of Santorini! After sailing for 20mins, you'll reach the Nea Kammeni jetty. The entrance fee for a guided tour is €5. Then you'll walk to the volcano’s ridge with your guide who is going to explain to you everything about the history and the geology of the volcano. You will stay at the volcanic island for about 1hr 30mins and after that you will hop back on the boat again for the next stop. The Volcano of Santorini is one of the most popular attractions and undoubtedly a must-see earth creation to explore while you are on the island. A rich history lies behind this picturesque island and its volcano constitutes an integral part of it and for good reason…its eruption created the beautiful Caldera.

This island is the heart of Santorini’s volcanic activity and one of the few active volcanoes in Europe. Walking on the volcanic rock, visitors can see steam rising from the ground and feel the heat beneath their feet. The landscape is rugged and barren, shaped by layers of lava and ash. A guide will accompany the hike, sharing fascinating details about the volcano’s eruptions, including the massive Minoan eruption around 1600BC that reshaped the entire island and created the famous caldera. This eruption is one of the largest volcanic events in recorded history and had a significant impact on the ancient civilizations around the Aegean Sea. The hike to the crater rim is moderately challenging but rewarding. From the top, you get panoramic views of the caldera, the surrounding islands, and of the Aegean Sea.

Hot Springs:

Our next stop will be the island of Palia Kameni, where the famous hot springs are located on the west side, a place that is really popular for its thermal waters. You will stop there for 30mins at a distance of about 30m from the shallow waters of Agios Nicholaos Beach (the Hot Springs). Take a dive off the boat and feel the warmth of these extraordinary waters. The waters are also full of sulphur, iron, and other materials coming from the volcano and they are very good for the skin. Swimming here is a unique experience: the water temperature is pleasantly warm, and the mineral content gives the water a slightly milky appearance. Many travellers find this part of the tour refreshing and a perfect way to unwind after the volcanic hike.

Return:

The tour typically lasts around 3 hours, making it a half-day excursion that fits well into most travel itineraries on Santorini. After departing from your last destination, the tour will finish at the Old Port of Fira. After your disembarkation, you should choose one of the ways to go back up to Fira town...
